“Man’s rise or fall, success or failure, happiness or unhappiness depends on his attitude.” James Allen
It is true that you get what you focus on in life; so if your glass is always half empty then you’re going to have a pretty miserable time. Here are some life changing things that you can do to make a start in living a much richer and contented life.
1. WAKE UP AND TAKE ACTION
Do you wake up only to go about your day in a walking a coma, letting life beat you up? If so it’s time to stop and make the decision right now to take control of your life. If you don’t someone else will and they don’t have your best interests at heart. Take a moment to consider where you are in this moment and where you want to be. How are you going to get there?
Start by identifying your ‘big dream’ and then work out the necessary steps required for you to get there. Look at every aspect of your life, finance, health, body, career, leisure, travel and relationships. Here you will be able to define your own personal goals which serve to give each day real purpose and will force you into a positive state of mind.
“…goals create activity and activity as you work towards reaching them creates the very excitement which you need to accomplish or reach your objectives.” Zig Ziglar
2. LOOK AFTER YOURSELF, STARTING TODAY!
A healthy body and mind are essential in-order to give you the strength, energy and clarity to succeed in life while reducing the risk of illnesses. Get plenty of sleep each day, educate yourself in nutrition and know what you’re putting into your body and how it affects you. Find an appropriate and regular exercise routine that you actually can enjoy. If you see sport as a chore you are more likely going to quit, so finding the right one for you is crucial. Remember exercise isn’t limited to team sports or the gym, what about martial arts, kayaking, surfing or rock climbing for example? If you are not a self-starter then you will benefit from team sports, a gym buddy, joining a class or investing in a personal trainer, these will help serve as powerful motivators. Exercise plays an important role to a happier lifestyle beyond the superficial because it provokes a natural sense of well being caused by the brain’s secretion of endorphins.
3. SMARTEN UP AND FEEL SHARP
Every man wants to look good and when you do, you feel awesome and people interact with you more positively whatever the environment or situation. Take pride in your appearance, get on top of your grooming and wear clothes that fit you well and suit your body shape.
4. YOU ARE YOUR ENVIRONMENT
If you live and work in an inspiring and positive space then this can help your thinking. Organise and de-clutter this space and fill it with meaningful things that can serve you as tools to provide you with indirect affirmations on how to think that also inspire and motivate you.
5. BE GRATEFUL FOR WHAT YOU’VE GOT
Don’t devalue or forget what you have. Even in extreme circumstances such as a death of someone close, it’s important to remain as positive as you can. Dealing with bad situations with a negative mindset only creates further stress and anxiety in both you and the people around you. Being grateful for what you have or what you have had is a major key in feeding a positive attitude and helps you to tackle difficult situations head on with clarity.
6. WISE UP AND LEARN TO PLAY YOUR HAND
If you find yourself being envious of those that appear to have it all then you need to stop wasting time and energy, it’s not a true or accurate method to measure your own value. There are always going to be people that appear to have more or better of something than you whether it’s looks, lifestyle, women, cars, job or salary. Speculating how they have been able to get these things or to focus on why you haven’t got them only serves to distract you from your own reality. Wise up and concentrate on you and to improving your own circumstances. What do you aspire to be, to have, to learn or experience and how are you going to get them? Go write them down and stick them somewhere you’ll see every day and sure enough over time you’ll see dramatic improvements.
7. CHANGE SOMEONE’S LIFE
Go give something back and help someone or a charity that could do with some help. Give blood, set up a fund raising event or give up your time for someone. Choose something close to your heart and it will mean a hell of a lot more and the buzz that you get from it will be one of the best feelings you’ll ever get.
8. STUDY SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE
One of the best lessons in being successful is to study those that have done it. You can learn or be inspired by the stories of the people that you admire. Identify those who have achieved great things, defeated the odds or who are self made for example. How did they do it? Note key factors that are significant in their success and look to mirror any actions or behaviors that can help you to produce the same kind of results in your own experiences. Before long you will be noticing improved patterns in your thinking and in what you are able to achieve.
9. INVEST IN YOURSELF
Utilize your free time to improving yourself by absorbing yourself in media or activities that have the ability shape your future, to expand your mind and skills. Listen to personal development audio while traveling, read inspiring books or exercise for example. Time is more valuable than money, so use it to enrich your life.
10. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE
“Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go” Oscar Wilde
Have you noticed how we tend to avoid negative people? Negativity is tiresome and can create feelings of resentment and frustration that can drive people away like a bad smell. It focuses on what can’t be done, it blames and uses language such as can’t, won’t, unable to and focuses on consequences as an outcome. Thankfully positivity grants you the ability to connect with others easily. It opens doors of opportunity and concentrates on what can be done offering alternatives and suggestions. Positivity has the ability to motivate, to encourage and empower people, it can facilitate growth, progression, and build respect and trust.
Both positivity and negativity are infectious so fire or remove the people in life who tell you that you can’t think big or who bring you down and instead surround yourself with people who believe in you and support you. Similarly realise that this applicable to you to so ensure that you use positive language in the written word and your interactions.
11. BE PROACTIVE NOT REACTIVE
Don’t bury your head in the sand, problems snowball when left so attack head on before they have the opportunity to frustrate or devastate. Being proactive is always better than being reactive
12. DRAW A LINE, DON’T CROSS AND DON’T LET IT BE CROSSED
If everybody followed the ancient rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.“ we would all be a hell of a lot happier and trusting. Unfortunately there are many people out there who are only out for themselves. Drawing a line as to what you are prepared to tolerate from others is a invaluable way in which you can remove and protect yourself from the disingenuous and the fall out that comes with them. Similarly it helps you to live your own life with a respect for others, it also builds integrity and strength of character that people are naturally attracted to. Strong bonds and lasting relationships can only be created with such attributes.
13. LIVE IN THE PRESENT
The past should serve to educate you, if you focus on the past you get left behind. Live the present and prepare for your future.
14. PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK
Learn to acknowledge own strengths and uniqueness and appreciate everything you have already achieved. From here you can build confidence and motivation to succeed in anything you put your mind to.
15. LEARN FROM FAILURE
“Forget mistakes. Forget failure. Forget everything except what you’re going to do now and do it. Today is your lucky day.” Will Durant
Don’t beat yourself up over your mistakes or when you think you have failed and DON’T give up! There is no such thing as failure, only feedback.
16. BE YOURSELF, YOU CAN’T BE ANYONE ELSE
Living your life trying to be someone your not will never bring you happiness. Fashioning your identity on the forever changing ‘what’s cool’ or ‘who’s cool’ as defined by the media is not really a good move as it is largely superficial, empty and fueled by money. Why celebrate people for simply being in the public eye? Lets celebrate those who have achieved great feats or have changed the peoples lives for the better? Find your inner self and be someone of substance, let your own values, goals and interests define who you are.
