You’ve wanted to start an online business for years, it hasn’t happened. This post is about punching through overwhelm, fear and procrastination and taking action to start your online business.
I have wanted to dive into setting up my own online business for a long time, well over ten years in fact. The dream of escaping the 9 to 5 in favour of an automated 24/7 online operation has always been the ultimate goal, yet I was stuck – full of ideas and knowledge but with a lack of faith in making any of them work.
The main cause is getting stuck in the quest for knowledge, spending hours consuming vast quantities of content from the experts who are already living the dream in an attempt to find the magic formula and assurances that our own idea will be a success. You know it is important to learn from people who are successful but it also can be really demotivating if you spend all your time wondering why you’re not as successful them.
The volume of information can cause us to lose focus through distraction, become indecisive and loose confidence in our ideas. While we procrastinate we are no closer to in escaping the 9 to 5. As time passes the regret of missed opportunity is a beast, one that sits alongside you each day as you write that performance report for your boss, one that you hope will give you that 1% pay increase next year. The fact of the matter is that too much information leads to overwhelm and in-action. We need to stop this addiction to distraction.
Here are some things that reshaped my thinking that I hope can help you shift towards real transformation.
Stop thinking. Take action. Build belief.
Make the decision to stop consuming so much content and take an immediate action towards your goal of starting an online business. Inaction kills our motivation and action feeds it.
Tony Robbins has a fantastic lesson about this with the ‘Belief and Success Cycle‘. The cycle has four elements; belief, potential, action and results. Each element feeds each other and enables a person to gain momentum for success. The amount of belief you have for yourself determines the amount of potential you can tap into. The amount of potential you have determines the amount of action that is taken and the amount of action gets you the results. The results in turn feed your belief and it all snowballs.
Find something you can action right now that is directly related to your starting an online business. No matter how small it is, just do it! Though you may not be able to transform your world this second, with some patience, self-discipline and commitment your future will be very different to the one currently waiting for you if you take no action at all.
Not everything we do will be successful but this is not a bad thing, it’s a lesson. So there is no such thing as failure only feedback. Use it to refine your approach and to fuel your determination. Experiment with your idea and understand what works and doesn’t. Spend your time streamlining what is working and make it better, more relevant and of a higher quality for your audience, customer or clients.
Failures, repeated failures, are finger posts on the road to achievement. One fails forward towards success
C. S. Lewis
Commit and be consistent
Consistent action is what builds the momentum we need to succeed in starting an online business so we need to commit every day to it. Ultimately the frequency of actions we take will get us over the line faster. We need to make the time in our busy schedule to make it happen and if this means we need to drop something then so be it.
Focus for mastery
We need to direct our focus in-order to truly master something. Focus is the antidote to distraction and overwhelm, it strengthens our skills and abilities, improves quality and the speed of the delivery of our output. Focus enables us to declutter our minds and by reducing the content we consume we reduce the noise and we can move forward with confidence and momentum towards starting our online business.
